Analysis of H2, O2,
N2, CH4, CO, CO2 and C1-C8 Hydrocarbons Through
High Resolution Chromatography
APPLICATION # 170
The
Analysis
This GC is used to analyze H2, O2, N2, CH4,
CO, CO2, gases by thermal conductivity detection. Additionally, this
GC simultaneously analyzes complex mixtures of C1-C8 hydrocarbons with high
resolution hydrocarbon type capillary column.
How It
Works
A single injection introduces the sample into two
different column systems, a and b:
-
The sample enters
a molecular sieve column and a porous polymer column in series. The
compounds are detected by a TCD detector. Hydrogen, oxygen (argon),
nitrogen, methane, and carbon monoxide emerge from the column between
1-4 minutes depending on column temperature. At 5.0 minutes, a valve is
switched and CO2 elutes at 6.5 minutes.
-
The remainder of the sample enters a 100-meter column
connected to an FID detector. The first compound eluted is methane at
8-9 minutes.
At the time of methane elution or after CO2
elution, the oven can be temperature programmed at the desired rate to separate
the hydrocarbons in the capillary column. The separation of C4's can be
performed under cryogenic temperature programming.
