Simultaneous Analysis of Permanent Gases and C1-C5 Saturated and Unsaturated Hydrocarbons

The Analysis

This GC is used to analyze oxygen (O2), nitrogen (N2), carbon dioxide (CO2) and carbon monoxide (CO) and the C1-C5 saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons. Separation of C4 isomers is accomplished by an alumina plot column protected against water deactivation by a carbo-wax column.

 

How It Works

The hydrocarbon sample is injected into a porous polymer column. The H2, O2, N2, CH4, and CO elute from the column and are detected by the TCD detector, as shown in Figure 1. At approximately 6.0 minutes, the CO2 elutes from the column. Simultaneously, the hydrocarbon sample is also injected into a mega-bore column and a plot column using helium as the carrier gas. The C1-C5 hydrocarbons move through the plot column to the FID detector where the separation is completed, as shown in Figure 2. Water and higher hydrocarbons are vented. 

Total analysis time is approximately 19 minutes.
