Benzene and Toluene in Gasoline (ASTM D-3606)

APPLICATION # 230

The Analysis

The GC is configured for the analysis of benzene and toluene in finished gasolines. Benzene can be determined at levels between .1 and 5% by volume and toluene can be determined at levels between 2 and 20% by volume.

How It Works

The sample is injected with an auto-sampler into a packed column connected to a valve, which separates components according to boiling point. After octane has eluted the flow through the column is reversed and the polar components are eluted to a polar column. The octane and lighter components pass through the polar column which separates the aromatic and non-aromatic compounds. These compounds are then analyzed by either FID or TCD detectors. The figure below was obtained using a TCD detector.
