Detailed Hydrocarbon Analysis (DHA) is a gas chromatography based technique to determine the composition of individual hydrocarbons and hydrocarbons by group type in spark emission fuels. DHA supports petroleum refining and production clients helping them optimize production, meet regulatory requirements and enhance profitability. It is also used in concert with high temperature simulated distillation (ASTM D7169) to correct the ‘front end’ of the boiling point curve due to carbon disulfide and how it affects the chromatographic separation.
DHA is sometimes referred to as PIONA or PIANO because of the ability of the DHA application software to categorize the individual hydrocarbons into their group type (paraffins, isoparaffins, olefins, naphthenes, aromatics and oxygenates).
DHA is the preferred technique today to characterize hydrocarbon streams by their individual components. The technique is based on the separation of individual hydrocarbon components by utilizing ultra-high resolution capillary gas chromatography and reference component databases based on retention time.
Our DHA analyzers are comprehensive in nature. They include an automated Agilent 7890B GC, pre-fractionation system (if required), ultra-high resolution column, GC and DHA software (Hydrocarbon Expert™), calibration standards, on-site installation/performance verification and application training
